How many layers does your roof have?
Using a pair of binoculars, you can take a look at your roof and see if there are multiple layers of shingles. Adding shingles on top of other shingles is a common technique to save money. Regardless, if you are having issues with leaking, adding a few extra shingles is no longer an option. When you have your roof work done, you can expect to have a small additional cost in the bid for getting rid of the old shingles and throwing them in a construction dumpster.
Roofing materials vary drastically in cost
When you bought your home, you loved the way the roof looked. Unfortunately, when you get a bid for your roof, one type will be drastically different in price than another. If you need to make a budget decision, consider how much it will cost to repaint your home. Most of the time, you can choose a lower cost roof and simply change the color of your home to match. Once you have found affordable shingles that work with your roof, you can get a reasonable bid.
Gutters are not the same as roofing
Naturally, since so many roofing jobs also involve gutters, you will commonly see a figure for gutters in the roofing bid. Many times, since a roofing job involves removing the gutters, they want you to have an idea of how much it would cost to go ahead and replace them at this time. This does not mean that you must purchase new gutters and have them installed when you have a re-roof job done to your home. Instead, it is entirely optional and the cost to have your old gutters put back on your new roof are often included in the bid.
